Why I Ditched Candles and Fell in Love with Essential Oils
From Candles to Clean Air: Why I Diffuse Essential Oils Instead

There was a time when I burned candles every single day—in every room. I loved the cozy ambiance, the flickering glow, and of course, the scent that would fill my home. But something changed when I started diffusing essential oils.

Have you ever noticed the black soot that lingers when you snuff out a candle? Or the residue that builds up on walls and furniture over time? I hadn’t either—until I stopped burning candles and started diffusing.

Why I Made the Switch

When I discovered Young Living essential oils in 2019, I was intrigued but cautious. I'm not a scientist and I don’t obsessively read every label—but I do care about what goes into my home, especially with pets around. Once I saw the difference in air quality, and learned more about what candles may actually release into the air, I knew I had found a better way.

Burning candles—especially those made with paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances—can release harmful chemicals like benzene, toluene, and soot into your indoor air. For most people, the risk is low in small doses. But if you’re lighting them daily like I was, or if you or someone in your home has asthma, allergies, or migraines, these emissions can be irritating and even harmful over time.

But I Still Love a Great Scent…

That’s where essential oils came in and changed everything.

Diffusing essential oils fills your home with pure, plant-based aromas—minus the toxins and smoke. But what really surprised me was how different oils could do so much more than just smell nice.

Here are just a few categories of essential oils and the benefits they offer:

🌸 Floral Oils
Think Lavender, Geranium, or Ylang Ylang. These oils are known for their calming and mood-boosting properties. I love diffusing lavender in the evenings to unwind or adding a few drops to a bath for spa-like vibes.
🌲 Conifer & Wood Oils
Oils like Cedarwood, Northern Lights Black Spruce (my personal fave at bedtime), and Pine bring that crisp, grounding, outdoorsy scent indoors. They’re especially helpful for emotional balance and grounding—perfect for meditation or stressful days.
🍋 Citrus Oils
From Lemon to Orange to Bergamot (this one is my jam), citrus oils are bright, energizing, and cheerful. They can help lift your mood, boost focus, and even freshen up stale rooms or funky kitchens.
🌿 Herbaceous & Minty Oils
Peppermint, Eucalyptus (I am addicted to Eucalyptus & Peppermint combined), and Thyme not only smell clean and refreshing but can also support clear breathing and mental clarity. Peppermint is my go-to for afternoon slumps or when I need to perk up.
💆 Soothing & Resinous Oils
Think Frankincense (ummm, YES please), Myrrh, or Copaiba—oils that support emotional wellness, relaxation, and even skin health. They bring a sense of peace and sacred calm that no candle ever gave me.

The Science Behind the Scent

Even if you're not a “sciency” person (hi, same), it’s cool to know that scent directly affects the limbic system—the part of your brain that controls emotions and memory. Some essential oils have even been shown to help lower heart rate, ease stress, and improve sleep. So, when you’re diffusing, you're doing more than just making your house smell amazing—you're actually supporting your mood and wellness.

A Final Note on Candles

I’ll always love the cozy glow of a candle. But after learning more about what’s in them—and feeling the difference in my own home—I just can’t go back. Diffusing gives me the scent, the vibe, and the benefits, without the worry.
